Built Not Bought

Where You’ve Seen Jill

Some days, you're excited about what you're building

Some days, you’re lit up by a big client win or a new idea that finally clicks. You can feel the momentum building, and it reminds you why you started in the first place. Then there are those sleepless nights, lying awake in bed at 3 a.m. “What if I’m screwing this all up? What does everyone else have figured out that I don’t? Is this worth it?”

Still, you believe you can build a business that has real impact, pays you well, and doesn’t chew up everything else you care about in the process… but it’s not easy. You’ve got revenue goals to meet, clients depending on you, and a vision you’re trying to protect, all without losing your sanity.

That’s why Built Not Bought exists. Each week, I write about the real trade-offs founders face: the tough days that make you question why you started, the pressure of payroll when cash is tight, the quiet fear you’re getting it wrong even when things look fine on the outside. You’ll also get the perspective and tools you need to keep going: to make money, find meaning in the work, and not burn yourself out along the way.

What Is Built Not Bought?

Built Not Bought is about rejecting the myth that, as a founder, you have to play by someone else’s rules (VC investors, Silicon Valley playbooks, or the hustle-till-you-drop culture) to grow a real company. It’s for founders like you who want to build on your own terms: profitable, sustainable, and values-aligned.

It doesn’t mean you’re anti-growth, or that you’ve settled for being “just” a small business. It also doesn’t mean doing everything alone. What it does mean is refusing to make the false choice between poverty-wage lifestyle businesses and unicorn-or-bust. Built Not Bought is the middle path for self-funded founders of smart, intentional growth that actually fits your life and your mission.

Hi, I'm Jill James

I didn’t set out to become an advisor to founders. I started this company out of necessity. When I was seven months pregnant, I realized being the COO of a VC-backed startup wasn’t going to work. I wanted to design a business that worked for me.

That’s how a lot of self-funded founders begin. We’re not chasing unicorn status, we’re trying to build meaningful companies that offer good jobs, financial stability, and room to live our lives. From my years as a banker, financial planner, and executive inside high-growth startups, I knew there were many ways to be a successful CEO without following the venture playbook.

This newsletter is where I share what I’ve learned along the way: the decisions, frameworks, and trade-offs that matter most when your company is in its awkward adolescence. You’ve found customers, you’re making money, and now you’re staring down the messy middle of how to double, triple, maybe 10x, without losing yourself or your mission. I write to help you see the options, avoid the traps, and grow in a way that actually fits you.
